Susan Corser

I follow multiple paths in my work, thinking about places past and present, hoping to remind the viewer of their own places and memories. I focus on the movement I see in the subject, as well as the compositions created by abstract shapes in nature. I look for patterns of light and shadow to create the artwork’s structure and meaning. My intent as an artist is to create balance between opposing forces, between variety and continuity, darks and light, rhythm and melody.

My paintings also reflect my lifelong passion for the landscape, reflected by my work in land conservation and environmental planning. I have always been fascinated by places, both urban and rural, and attempt in my artwork to explore the underlying character of a place. I see both the landscape and the arts as healing forces. Land conservation aims to preserve the wholeness inherent in a landscape, just as the artist strives to balance the whole with the parts, mirroring the inner balancing act within ourselves.
